White van man targeted

The notorious 'white van man' is being targeted by Scottish police in their latest attempt to improve road safety and curb the number of road deaths.
Van drivers who fail to wear seat belts, speed or carry passengers unsafely are felt to be the biggest threat to road safety, along with the previously recognised threat that van men driving without van insurance pose to themselves and other road users.
According to official statistics, around one in five of all accidents involving vans result in a fatality or a serious injury significantly more than for smaller family cars.
Commenting on his force's focus on commercial vehicles in the latest crack-down, chief constable John Vine said that the authorities were particularly concerned about the risk they posed to other road users.
"We are focusing our attention on van drivers and their passengers because experience tells us that a significant number of them are not wearing seatbelts within vehicles that are being driven at illegal speeds," he said.
"They may not be unique in this regard, but we are sufficiently concerned for their safety and for the well-being of other road users to undertake this tailored enforcement activity."
