Voice-controlled sat nav released

Fri, 19 May 2006

Delivery drivers will no longer have to struggle with cumbersome maps or fiddle around with the buttons on their van's satellite navigation system (sat nav) in order to find their drop-off point, thanks to a new invention.

Now, technology from Tele Atlas means that sat nav systems can now be voice activated, meaning that all you have to do to find a specific street or area is tell your sat nav directly.

The development is sure to be a hit with van drivers who need to know as quickly as possible how to get to their next destination.

However, voice activation is also good news for road safety, as it allows van drivers to keep both hands on the wheel at all times, and their eyes on the road, reducing the chances of having to make a claim on the van insurance should an accident occur.

Road safety campaigners have expressed increasing concern over the use of sat nav systems, claiming that they distract the attention of the drivers from the road.

They also claim that drivers place too much trust in their sat navs to tell them where to go, failing to use their own common sense in deciding on the best route.
