Van drivers get behaviour guidance
Fri, 23 Dec 2005
After being the subject of endless complaints from motorists the "white van man" is finally to be mollified.
Freight industry bosses have agreed to draw up a best-practice guide for van drivers, outlining "key aspects of professional driving".
Gone will be the days of two-fingered hand gestures, blasting horns and abusive language, reports the Evening Standard.
The 60-page guide advises the 2.3 million commercial van drivers in the UK to act with due respect towards other road users and to ensure that they bear their company's reputation in mind when on the road.
In the guide, drivers are urged to remember that they are "professional", "skilled" people doing a "demanding and testing job". In view of this, the white van man should exercise "concentration, observation and anticipation at all time".
"Van drivers are often tarnished with a reputation for being rude and amateurish in their approach to work," the guide says.
"It is unfortunate as it is the few bad drivers on our roads who have created this perception."
Van drivers are also reminded that adequate van insurance is a must in order to ensure that good road-safety practices are complied with.
