Van drivers 'taking needless risks'
Van drivers may be getting more dangerous on Britain's roads due to commercial van drivers being forced to take unnecessary risks in order to keep up with their hectic schedules, the latest research reveals.
According to the findings of the AA Motoring Trust's study into van usage, commercial van drivers frequently find themselves driving too fast and missing essential rest stops whilst on the road, making a collision, and hence a claim on their van insurance, all the more likely.
As a result of an unrealistic schedule for delivery drivers, many admit that they eat and drink whilst at the wheel, posing a significant danger to both themselves and other road users.
The report says that employees are not doing enough to ensure that their drivers behave in a safe manner whilst on the road, providing insufficient driver training and failing to ensure that drivers completed regular driving assessments.
Road safety campaigners have reminded companies that they have a duty to ensure that their van drivers are not forced to drive for too long without regular breaks.
