Van drivers warned over driving other vehicles

Van drivers in Britain are being warned to take care and check their insurance when driving other vehicles.
Car drivers tend to be covered by third party insurance to drive other cars in case of an emergency, but commercial policies do not generally offer the same automatic cover.
Van drivers and drivers of commercial vehicles should check their policy closely to find out whether they are insured to drive another vehicle in an emergency, according to BiB insurance brokers in Darlington.
Website icTeesside reports that policyholders can get caught out by the difference in general and commercial vehicle insurance policies and should check documents carefully to establish what they are covered to drive.
BiB retail manager, Jacqui Watson, said: "A typical example might be someone spends most of the time driving a van for their business, say a plumber or electrician, and assumes that the insurance policy they have on that vehicle also covers them to drive their wife's car. With 99 per cent of policies this isn't the case."
Commercial vehicle insurance policies can also differ from typical car insurance policies in provision of cover for items stolen from a vehicle or lost when a vehicle is stolen or damaged, known as "personal effects".
Many commercial policies do not provide personal effects cover unless drivers take out separate insurance.
