Van and truck drivers working over time

Many freelance van and truck drivers are breaking European legislation by driving for long distances without a break.
A report by the BBC found that around half of heavy goods vehicle drivers stopped on roads in north Wales were putting themselves and others at risk by breaking the law on driving hours.
Although lorries and trucks account for only seven per cent of UK motorway traffic, 22 per cent of fatal motorway accidents involve these types of vehicles.
According to 4Car News, a senior police officer told BBC's Radio 4 that police believed disreputable companies were to blame for the problem, forcing drivers to work long hours without rest-stops.
Police also described how truckers warned each other via radio when officers were carrying out checks in certain areas.
"Drivers in one particular firm will get together to decide who has the best charts out of three or four wagons," the police official explained.
"They'll send a sacrificial lamb first so you'll see a lorry, you'll pull that one, but the ones that are behind will have the real problems with the charts and will thunder through safely to the boats."
A total of 20 per cent of motorway accidents are blamed on driver fatigue, heightening the necessity for comprehensive truck or van insurance policies.
