Second-hand cars cause top complaints

Almost one in ten complaints to a government consumer helpline are about second-hand cars, new research shows.

Behind home improvement work, second-hand cars were the biggest source of complaints to the helpline Consumer Direct.

However, to help motorists in future Consumer Direct has offered some advice to avoid any unpleasant hiccoughs.

Consumer Direct spokesperson Carol Brady said: "To avoid potential pitfalls when buying a used car, never rush and always make sure you undertake plenty of research.

"The Consumer Direct website has a helpful checklist people can use to assess the car's condition and find signs of whether a car has been stolen or clocked."

People often underestimate the cost of motoring and Ms Brady also advised them to make sure that they take account of all expenses, including MOT, road tax, petrol, repairs and servicing.

Choosing an insurance policy that is designed for what you are driving, such as van insurance, can help to bring down the cost of motoring, whether you are driving a new or second-hand vehicle.
