New device to improve van crash safety
A car-parts supply company has developed a new device that can be fitted to the fronts of vans to reduce the chances of pedestrians being injured in the event of a collision.
UK-based Concept Mouldings says that its new protection system can significantly reduce the chances of a pedestrian sustaining a head injury in the event of a head-on collision.
According to the designers, the device works by absorbing the energy of the collision and protecting the pedestrian from the hardest parts of the front of the van.
The development could mark a breakthrough in road safety, with vans and SUV frequently criticised for the danger they pose to pedestrians.
"One of the most exciting aspects of our results is that because our products can be fitted as an aftermarket product by owners of vehicles we can start saving lives and serious injuries now rather than waiting for a long term legislative process", said Ian Finney, one of the designers behind the new device.
"The benefits are also likely to continue as vehicle design improves. For example, the results of testing our product on current vehicles are even better than on vehicles produced 10 years ago."
However, it is not clear whether fitting the device will result in lower car or van insurance premiums.
