Green vans should get congestion charge cut

Wed, 01 Mar 2006

An industry body is calling on London authorities to spread the green congestion charge discount to vans.

The call comes as a new London low emission zone scheme is being proposed that could hit van drivers even harder.

Currently the capital's congestion charge, managed by Transport for London (TfL), costs lorry and van drivers up to £40 million a year and the Low Emission Zone could hit the whole industry by as much as £390 million, according to Freight Transport Association (FTA) estimates.

An FTA spokesman said: "The discount would help commercial vehicle operators off-set the cost of the any London Low Emission Zone scheme and provides a sensible carrot to encourage companies to invest in the cleanest, greenest vehicles."

Under the London Low Emission Zone commercial vehicles over 3.5 tonnes would be required to meet strict emission standards in order to enter London.

The spokesman added: "Any low emission zone will present vehicle operators with significant costs in order to upgrade or replace vehicles ahead of their natural and carefully-planned cycles so TfL must look at 'carrots' wherever possible."

By switching to a greener alternative fuel van, drivers can make an impact on the environment and their pockets by saving money. A van insurance policy could also save cash.
