Green scheme to benefit van drivers
Wed, 25 Jan 2006
An advanced driving scheme launched by transport secretary Alistair Darling is soon to benefit van drivers across the UK.
The Safe and Fuel Efficient Drivers (SaFED) scheme will encourage van owners to drive more safely as well as promoting cheaper, more environmentally-friendly methods of getting around.
SaFED follows a similar pilot project last year which found that significant financial and environmental gains could be made by using advanced driving techniques. No noticeable impact on delivery times occurred as a result of the changes.
Benefits of the scheme include savings on fuel, reductions in carbon emissions, reduction of fuel consumption, fewer gear changes, fewer accidents, lower van insurance premiums, lower running costs and higher resale values.
"Van drivers can play their part in making Britain a greener place. At the same time making a tidy saving," said Mr Darling.
"The scheme we are launching today makes business sense. As our pilot shows greener, cheaper, safer driving is possible while still getting the product there on time."
The grant will initially fund 200 instructors offering training to around 3,500 van drivers across the country.
