Chip vans 'ruining children's health'

The UK's chip van drivers are being slammed by experts in the battle to persuade youngsters to eat more healthily.

Chip van owners are dealing a colossal blow to government efforts to keep children away from junk food, it has been claimed, following a failed bid by Fife Council to stop fast food trader Murray Cameron from selling fried food near a local playground.

But Scottish headteachers have condemned the ruling, calling on the Scottish Executive to help improve children's eating habits.

If successful, the restriction would have forced the businessman to sell chips from his van in the middle of a council estate rather than outside Madras College in St Andrews.

Mr Cameron, who has had more on his plate to worry about than van insurance over the last few months, told the Scotsman: "It is all very well to praise what Jamie Oliver is doing, but he makes millions.

"I've worked here for 14 years and all I'm trying to do is earn a living. I average about 50 customers a day. Not all the children come here. It's a choice they make."
