Chancellor expected to up emissions taxes

Wed, 22 Mar 2006

Gordon Brown is expected to raise tax on polluting cars in his budget today.

Reports suggest that the chancellor will up taxes for cars that emit more than 185 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometre.

This would include many high performance models along with sports utility vehicles.

It is thought the extra tax will come in the form of an added £35 on car tax bills putting them up to £200.

However, cars that pollute less are expected to be given a tax cut.

With fuel prices already high petrol duties are not expected to increase.

This has led to some measured relief from drivers and criticism from environmental groups.

Friends of the Earth director Tony Juniper told the Guardian: "It is incredible and pathetic that the chancellor can leave fuel duty unchanged at a time when the cost of using public transport is going up."

With travel costs rising one way to bring down the cost of motoring, especially if your business depends on it, is by ensuring you have good value van insurance.
