Vulnerable students at risk of crime
Fri, 23 Sep 2005
The need for home insurance for students is proving to be even greater after recent statistics revealed their vulnerable position.
According to the Home Office one in three students are the victims of crime, with burglary, robbery and theft the most common crimes.
The British Crime Survey found that 16-24 year olds are three times as likely to be victims of burglary and five times as likely to be victims of violent crime, compared to the general population.
Part of the reason for these statistics is that young people have a low awareness of crime. The problem is made worse when this lack of awareness means that they have not arranged adequate home insurance for their belongings.
With laptops, iPods and televisions, students, according to the Home Office, own more expensive items per head than anyone else in the country.
Research conducted by Saga Home Insurance found that without the right insurance students were forced to pay up to £900 to replace stolen items.
