Protect your frozen assets

Mon, 22 Aug 2005

As summer temperatures hopefully start to heat up, many households could find their frozen assets starting to thaw.

The hotter weather means that some UK household's freezers will breakdown and could affect around £3.7 billion worth of frozen food, according to Halifax Home Insurance.

The insurers is preparing to deal with £6.8 million worth of claims for spoilt food over the coming months, especially as the average freezer usually holds £145 worth of meals and treats.

"With millions of people across the UK set to hold barbecues over the bank holiday this weekend, it would be an absolute nightmare for the freezer, packed full of all those gourmet goodies to suddenly break down," said Vicky Emmott, senior underwriting manager at Halifax Home Insurance.

She added that insurance can go some way to ensuring that the financial cost of replacing the defrosted food can be recovered.

Above all, people are advised that if their freezer does defrost unexpectedly they should ensure that the contaminated food is disposed of safely and not refrozen.
