Police warn on 'sneak-in' burglaries
Police forces across the country are warning homeowners to keep their doors and windows secure at night during the hot weather, after a spate of burglaries where the offenders have simply entered the house without the need for a break-in.
The number of so-called 'sneak-in burglaries' has risen significantly since the period of hot weather began, with many people leaving their doors and windows ajar in order to cool down.
However, in doing so they are leaving their household contents at risk, and making the need to claim on the home insurance ever more likely.
In the West Yorkshire region alone, police estimate that a quarter of all burglaries occurring in the summer months are sneak-ins.
However, preventing them may not be so difficult, as Adrian Taylor of West Yorkshire police explained: "Sneak-in burglaries can so easily be prevented by taking simple crime prevention measures. When we see that these offences are still occurring it is frustrating as we are working extremely hard to crackdown on burglaries but we can not lock each door in the division.
"Burglars know that they can walk in through the door that you forgot to lock, and be out within seconds with your credit cards, mobile and car keys the very things that will cause the most disruption to your life."
