Police forces head for radical overhaul
Sat, 17 Sep 2005
Police forces in England and Wales could be set for a radical overhaul following a damning report from Britain's policing watchdog.
Homeowners would be well advised to ensure their home insurance is comprehensive to lessen the impact of burglary after the report, by Her Majesty's Inspector of Constabulary, revealed that many smaller forces are not making the grade.
According to the report, the current structure of 43 police forces across England and Wales, which was first established more than 30 years ago, is outdated, and many forces are not meeting the required standards.
"The findings are stark - very few forces assessed fully meet the required standard," the report said, according to Reuters.
"Larger forces are likely to have much greater capability and resilience whilst smaller forces, in many cases, find it hard to provide the services to an acceptable standard," it added.
Currently only seven forces have more than 4,000 officers and 19 have fewer than 2,000, the report revealed.
