Nottingham tops burglary table

Tue, 18 Apr 2006

Nottingham has been named as the most burglary-prone city in the UK, according to a national home insurance company.

Based on the frequency of household theft claims, Nottingham narrowly beat Hull into second place, with Leeds and Bristol identified by Endsleigh as other burglary hotspots.

The most favourable places to live if you want to reduce you home insurance premiums include Guilford, Coventry and Edinburgh, which recorded the lowest numbers of household theft claims.

Scotland came out favourably in the survey, with four of the nation's major cities in the top ten with the fewest burglary claims.

Police in Scotland welcomed the findings, saying they had worked hard to combat break-ins, while Nottinghamshire police dismissed the survey, as only about one in 20 home insurance policy holders had taken part.

The survey also found Northampton to be the most accident prone city in the UK, recording more accidental damage claims than any other, while Manchester recorded the fewest claims.

However, regardless of where in the country you live, the chances of experiencing a break-in can be significantly reduced by taking some basic precautions such as locking doors and windows when you go out and keeping valuables out of sight.
