New York storm to hit UK
Tue, 14 Feb 2006
Remnants of the weather system that brought chaos to New York last week may be about to hit the UK, forecasters have warned.
Thousands of travellers were left stranded in the US after blizzards buried parts of the northern seaboard under more than two feet of snow.
Winds of up to 50 miles an hour also knocked down power lines in the area, while others were damaged by falling tress.
With stormy conditions now predicted across most of the UK over the next few days, home insurance is a must for homeowners in order to cover any mishaps that may occur due to the weather.
Forecaster for PA WeatherCentre, Jeremy Plester, said that a pocket of cold air behind the weather system that had brought the heavy snowfalls in the States was likely to merge with other systems over the Atlantic Ocean.
The resulting "washing machine" effect may create a classic winter storm.
But he stressed that the UK should not expect to see any snowfalls, however.
"We're going to have some strong winds in west-facing areas such as Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and the West Country and everywhere will get a good soaking," he said.
