'Little terrors' to blame for property damage
Thu, 15 Dec 2005
New research has found that children cost their parents millions of pounds in damage compensation costs each year because of accidents around the home.
According to Barclays, around 44 per cent of parents have had to make a home insurance claim because of damage done by their children, with one in ten facing repair bills of between £200 and £1,000.
The most common accidents include destroying expensive ornaments when playing indoor sports or breaking beds by bouncing on them.
"It is impossible to keep an eye on young children all of the time and accidents such as spilt drinks or broken windows are inevitable," said Adrian Grace from Barclays.
"It is therefore essential that parents have adequate home insurance, particularly to cover accidental damage to help minimise the cost of replacing household items broken or damaged by their children."
Regionally, the research found that the Scots are the most anxious over their kids' behaviour in the house, with more than 40 per cent upgrading their home insurance when they get married.
