Insurance needed to cover stocking fillers

Christmas shoppers will spend more that £6.2 billion on stocking fillers alone, according to recent research.

A survey by Lloyds has revealed that with the iPod Nano topping many people's wish lists this year, stockings could warrant more contents or home insurance cover than under-the-tree gifts.

The average cost of a stocking will total £103 this year, Lloyds claims, with around 13 per cent of those questioned planning on spending as much as £500.

Popular gift choices include tickets to the World Cup, Little Britain DVDs and in some cases, engagement rings (not forgetting the humble Satsuma).

Lloyds representative, Phil Loney, said: "The Christmas spending spree means smiling faces for most families at this time of year. However, for some, Christmas can end in tears when Santa isn't the first visitor to arrive carrying a sack.

"With burglars on the prowl it's doubly important to make sure doors and windows are locked tight whenever your home is empty."

Lloyds also emphasised the importance of taking out a fully comprehensive home insurance policy to provide cover in the event of a break-in over Christmas.
