Homes left empty for longer

New research has found that homes are being left empty for longer and longer periods.

Empty houses are largely due to people's changing work and social habits that take them away more often.

A survey by a leading insurer found that a third of Brits spend longer than average at work and 14 per cent spend between 90 minutes and four hours commuting each day.

After the busy working day people are also more likely to be heading out to unwind.

Almost a quarter of people go out two or three nights a week and two thirds do not have time to cook an evening meal each night, often heading out to get sustenance.

A home being unoccupied regularly is a key factor in the risk of burglary. To ensure you get a better deal on your home insurance or do not forfeit cover it is necessary to get the right locks on doors and windows.

Heaters, ovens, candles and appliances left running, for example heat-generating items like hair straighteners, can also be a risk to a home left alone.
