Homeowners buy second hand

Wed, 17 May 2006

One in every seven household objects is second hand, according to a recent survey of homeowners, as the trend in bargain-hunting in charity shops and at car-boot sales becomes ever more popular.

The findings have prompted home insurance providers to remind homeowners that having comprehensive home insurance, covering all household items, is more important than ever.

The survey, conducted by a leading insurer found that only 21 per cent of homeowners would feel embarrassed if friends knew that an item had been bought second-hand, showing a recent shift in attitudes towards reusing other people's things.

The growth of online auctions sites such as eBay has also been a contributing factor, making discovering a bargain easier than ever.

However, it seems that homeowners are selective about what they do and do not by second hand, with electrical equipment the most likely to be bought brand new, while crockery, ornaments and furniture are the most likely to be reused.

Particularly in the case of antique ornaments, many of these items can be expensive, meaning that having home insurance that covers them will protect you against theft or damage.
