Homeowners 'losing community spirit'

The traditional British sense of community is not what it used to be, with rows between neighbours becoming more common than ever, according to a recent survey of homeowners.

The survey shows that common annoyances such as loud music and parking arrangement are causing a third of homeowners to have heated arguments with their neighbours, with 14 per cent saying that things got so bad that they had to move house.

And this is causing a breakdown in the sense of community and security that neighbours are supposed to provide, with 15 per cent admitting that they didn't trust their neighbours, and over 60 per cent saying that they wouldn't ask a neighbour to watch over their house while they were away.

Amazingly, over a third of those surveyed by Cornhill Insurance said that they did not know the names of the people who lived next door to them.

Conflict between neighbours is also having an impact on home insurance providers, with an increasing number of home insurance claims coming as a result of vandalism or damage resulting from a neighbourly dispute, according to industry experts.
