Homeowners threatened if snow continues
Homeowners are being warned to keep their heating on low to avoid the possibility of burst pipes after cold weather brought many parts of the UK to a standstill this week.
According weather forecasts from the BBC, the cold weather is set to continue over the next couple of days, with snow predicted to hit many parts of the country again throughout Thursday night and Friday.
With temperatures falling to between -5 and -8 degrees centigrade in England last night, burst pipes could become a distinct possibility for properties left unoccupied over the festive period.
Low temperatures can freeze water in pipes, leading to long-term heating problems, burst piping and water damage once the cold snap is over.
John Thompson from the Association of Plumbing and Heating Contractors said that homeowners will have little choice but to call out the plumber if pipes do burst.
Illustrating the necessity for adequate home insurance, particularly in such cold weather, Mr Thompson told the Western Mail: "Usually out-of-hours it would be double normal time [for a plumber]. At Christmas it could be up to triple time."
