Home insurance footing the bill for neighbours' damage
Thu, 22 Sep 2005
Homeowners' reluctance to get involved in disputes with their neighbours has led to large numbers of people claiming on their own home insurance for their neighbours' damage.
According to research released today by Tesco Home Insurance, nearly three quarters of the people surveyed would rather pay themselves, despite knowing the damage was not their fault.
Almost a quarter of this number were landed with bills exceeding £500.
Allan Burns, head of Tesco Home Insurance, said: "It would seem that the great British aversion to complaining is alive and well, despite the fact that it's costing them financially."
The survey found that nearly a third would rather foot the bill than complain, whilst one in 12 were simply too wary of getting into a fight with a neighbour they already had poor relations with.
Such a British fear of complaining may be costing the homeowner further than just the damage however, as home insurance premiums could rise when the time comes to renew the policy.
