Halifax launches "MOT" home check list
Tue, 11 Oct 2005
Insurance company Halifax is encouraging home insurance customers to carry out a series of checks this autumn by launching the Halifax Home MOT.
Halifax has already seen a 40 per cent increase in weather related claims since 2001, with over £20 million already paid out this year in storm damage claims.
The insurance company says that home owners should treat their houses in the same way as they do their vehicles, putting them through an annual MOT-style check-up.
Advice for what checks to carry out include checking for loose roofing tiles, turning the heating on low to prevent pipes freezing and clearing the guttering and chimney. Double checking that your insurance policy covers home emergencies is also recommended.
"Whilst it's the big weather events, such as the Carlisle floods and the tornado in Birmingham which make the headlines, frozen pipes, fallen trees and damaged roofs all torment UK households throughout the winter," said Vicky Emmott, senior underwriting manager at Halifax home insurance.
"With home emergencies, prevention is certainly better than cure and many claims could be avoided if householders spent a small amount of time preparing their homes for the winter."
Halifax home insurance's MOT check list is available as a free online download.
