Half of home insurance claims caused by kids
Thu, 13 Apr 2006
Easter may be a busier time of year than you'd expect for home insurance companies.
With the kids at home for the long weekend, the number of home insurance claims resulting from children's mischief is set to rise.
According to a survey from a major insurer, up to a half of all home insurance accidental damage claims are the result of children breaking or damaging things in the household.
Parents have reported the multitude of ways in which their children damage the house, from drawing on walls and furniture and smearing food on soft furnishings, to even posting food through the slot in the video recorder.
Other favourite kid catastrophes include blocking drains with toys, peeling off wallpaper and breaking family heirlooms.
The survey also found that toddlers under three years were the most likely to cause damage, with an estimated two-thirds of damage caused by kids caused by the under-threes.
Boys were also found to be more likely to cause damage than girls.
