Gardens are prime targets for thieves

Tue, 02 May 2006

Expensive lawnmowers and barbeques are making British gardens increasingly attractive targets for burglars, according to a recent survey.

The research by Churchill Insurance found that goods worth an estimated £295 million are stolen from gardens every year, making comprehensive home insurance all the more important.

The attraction for thieves is clear, with the survey finding that the average British garden contains £738 worth of garden furniture and gardening equipment, not to mention plants and garden ornaments.

Nearly a quarter of those surveyed said that their garden or shed had been burgled in the past, and a third admitted that it would be easy for a thief to get into their garden.

Ensuring that your home insurance covers the contents of your garden will become more important as the evenings get warmer, meaning that garden furniture and barbeque equipment is more likely to be left out where thieves can get at it.

Taking simple precautions can drastically lower your chances of becoming a victim of crime, such as always locking your shed and ensuring that fences and gates are secure.
