Dodgy pub goods trade worth £1bn
Tue, 09 May 2006
The selling of black market goods in pubs around Britain is a £1 billion industry, fuelling burglary rates in the UK, new research claims.
It is estimated that around 5.6 million British adults buy goods illegally in pubs, 3.7 million of them knowing that they are probably stolen from people's houses, according to research commissioned by Halifax bank.
In fact, its research found that two-thirds of those who admitted buying dodgy goods from pubs wouldn't be discouraged from buying the goods even if they looked like they had just been taken from somebody's house.
Commenting on the findings, Professor Martin Gill, a criminologist at Leicester University, said that by accepting stolen goods, members of the public were not only engaging in the illegal activity themselves, they were also encouraging others to go out and burgle houses to meet the demand.
"By choosing to turn a blind eye in return for a bargain, normal law abiding people are effectively sustaining a market for thieves to exist and fuelling incidents of theft and burglary across the UK each year," he said.
The findings are bad news for home owners anxious to protect their property, and underline the importance of having a comprehensive home insurance policy.
