Cold weather brings rats

The recent cold snap affecting the nation could lead to a rats looking for shelter in people's home.

Homeowners are being advised to keep their houses 'rodent proof', so rats do not lead to damage and claims on home insurance policies.

A leading insurer has given advice to people to stop any unwanted visitors coming to stay.

Firstly you should make sure that there is no food to attract rodents. Spilt rubbish should be cleared up and household rubbish should be put in dustbins or wheelie bins in bags with the lids firmly on.

You should also try to hold them back from entering the house by making sure that cracks in walls and windows are plugged up.

Possible ways in around pipework and drain covers should also be looked into.

If rats get in you should try to make sure that they do not want to stay. Often the rodents look for places to nest and bags of clothes and cardboard boxes can make great warm homes for them.

A general level of cleanliness around the house will also help to stop rats being attracted to your home.
