Brits turn to neighbours for security
Fri, 07 Apr 2006
More Brits turn to their neighbours to keep an eye on their home than install burglar alarms, according to new research.
HSBC has found that 73 per cent of people would ask their neighbours to watch over their homes if they went away, but only 44 per cent have a burglar alarm installed.
The most trusting neighbours were found to be in Wales, where 79 per cent of households would ask their neighbours to collect their mail and check their house if they were away.
Stephen Young, of HSBC, said: "On the whole we have become more security conscious and, as our survey shows, we are even willing to turn to our neighbours for additional peace of mind.
"What householders may not realise is that other methods of security not only act as good deterrent against burglary but can also save money on home insurance premiums."
He went on to encourage people to consider further security measures on top of burglar alarms, such as approved locks on the windows and becoming a member of an approved neighbourhood watch scheme.
