Brits burgled mid-week
Wed, 28 Sep 2005
Mid-week burglaries are costing UK residents around £127 million a year, according to home insurance company Churchill.
The research provides an insight into when burglars are most likely to operate, finding that homes are just as vulnerable to theft during week nights as they are at the weekends.
"Our findings show that burglars will target homes on week nights as well as weekends and that homes need to be secure at all times, whether people are at home or not," said head of Churchill home insurance, Martin Scott.
Figures from the Home Office show that residents with no extra home security features are 15 times more likely to become the victims of targeting by burglars than those with good security.
Uninsured residents are therefore at risk of loosing out financially when faced with the cost of replacing possessions and repairing any damage caused by the thieves, if simple precautions are not taken, like locking the back door and making sure all windows are secure.
Last year the average cost of home burglary was estimated at almost £1,000.
