'Big freeze' warnings for homeowners
Mon, 21 Nov 2005
A specialist insurance company is warning homeowners to make preparations ahead of this winter's predicted "big freeze" to avoid making costly home insurance claims.
Insurer, Hiscox, made the warning after the Met Office predicted that Britain could face one of the coldest winters in a decade this year.
Some simple precautions should be taken, Hiscox says, in order to avoid problems once the cold weather and predicted high winds set in.
Advice offered by the company includes checking roofs for dislodged tiles, repairing damaged or cracked windows, giving the boiler a pre-winter MOT and keeping the heating running on low to stop pipes from freezing over.
"As well as looking at the physical state of your home, we would also advise people to review their home insurance arrangements at this time of year," said Kevin Kerridge, head of direct business at Hiscox.
"Check that all your prized possessions, both inside and out, are covered by your home contents policies. This will ensure that should you suffer a loss you are fairly compensated."
Mr Kerridge added that taking just a few hours to look over a property and taking any necessary precautions could save homeowners money in the long run.
