Big chill may hit Britain
Fri, 27 Jan 2006
Despite already chilly temperatures throughout the UK over the last few days, the freezing weather conditions which have plagued continental Europe this week are now threatening to hit the UK, weather experts are warning.
The big chill, which has frozen much of north-east Europe and claimed 24 lives in Russia to date, could now hit the UK, with Wales predicted to be in for the worst of the weather.
Arrival of the cold snap depends on how much of the Atlantic influence is going to come in from the west combined with how far west the high pressure will come across from the east, says Paul Knightley, a meteorologist at PAWeather.
"The computer models are hinting that the cold air that has come down from the Arctic Circle into Russia will head into central Europe including the Italian Alps, so it could come here," he told the Western Mail.
"The big question is whether or not easterly winds are going to develop. That would push that cold weather here - some forecasters think it will, some think it won't."
The risk of frozen pipes over the weekend should therefore put homeowners on their guard. Preventative measures such as keeping the heating on low as well as ensuring that adequate home insurance is in place are recommended.
