Pensioner duped by bogus caller
Homeowners are being advised to check their home insurance is up to date and be on their guard after a bogus caller duped a pensioner.
The 83-year-old resident of Newbury, Berkshire was deceived by a man in his early 20s, who claimed to be from the water company.
When the woman found the man in her back garden, he told her that he was working at a neighbour's home and needed to go upstairs in her house to "run the taps."
Using this pretext to enter her home, he then ransacked the pensioner's bedroom, stealing hundreds of pounds in cash.
"Distraction burglary is one of the most callous offences, with old and vulnerable people often being targeted by such criminals," DC Rob Tomblin told the Reading Chronicle.
"It's a priority of the police to prevent such offences in the first place and also to catch those responsible.
"We urge anyone who has an old or vulnerable relative, friend or neighbour to pass on reduction advice to them and take the time to ensure they are safe and protected."
Homeowners of all ages are also advised to protect their property with a comprehensive home insurance policy.
