Car crushed whilst on holiday

A trainee teacher returned from holiday to find her car had been crushed by the local council.

Aimee Lawrence, 25, had failed to renew her tax disk before going away on holiday. So when the council put a 'remove within 24 hours' sticker on the car, no-one was around to remove the car – so it was towed and crushed by Barnett Council.

And the council is now seeking to recover the cost of the removal from Ms Lawrence.

The car had new tires, a current MOT, was parked legally and fully insured.

But Ms Lawrence has no obvious redress against the council – and her car insurance policy is extremely unlikely to offer her any help as not holding valid road tax invalidates most insurance policies.

Ms Lawrence told This is Hertfordshire: "I feel disgusted. Not only have they crushed my car and my only form of transport in conditions which were grossly unfair, but now I'm going to be doubly punished for their incompetence.

"I can't afford to get another car. It's so depressing."

The council insists it was fully within its rights and says it was believed that the vehicle had been abandoned and none of the nearby residents knew anything about the car.
