Burglaries fall as violent crime increases

The number of burglaries in England and Wales has fallen by 20 per cent, according to police figures released yesterday.

Homeowners should not neglect their home insurance policies, however, as the data also reveals that violent crime increased in 2004-5.

According to the figures, there were more than one million violent incidents against the person over that period, including sexual offences and robberies – an increase of seven per cent on the previous year.

Gun crime also displayed a rise, reaching 11,000 crimes, up six per cent on previous figures.

Home Office minister Hazel Blears told the BBC's Today programme that the apparent rise in violent crime actually points towards improvements in reporting and recording of offences.

Homeowners would nonetheless be well advised to continue to invest in comprehensive home insurance to protect their property.
