Fleet Insurance
OFT saves fleets millions
Fleet managers have saved between £90 million and £140 million over the last two years thanks to a clamp-down on the servicing restrictions present in car warranties, independent research shows.
According to research from the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) conducted in 2003, having a company car serviced at a manufacturer-approved garage cost on average £80 more than at an independent garage, with little difference in quality of service.
However, it was found that many car warranties placed restrictions on where the car could be serviced, warning that the warranty could become invalid if an independent garage was used.
Now the joint efforts of the OFT and the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders have meant that there are no longer such restrictions, meaning that fleet managers can take advantage of the cheaper service offered by independent garages.
The findings will come as good news to fleet managers hoping to save valuable funds in the face of the rising fleet insurance, fuel and tax costs which have made business motoring more expensive than ever.
