Lorries become canvases for art project
Tue, 24 Jan 2006
Southwark Council will have to provide fleet insurance for quite an unusual collection of vehicles after a number of bin lorries became blank canvases for an unusual art project in south London.
Artists have painted their colourful designs on a total of eight dust carts, which are now doing the rounds south-east of the Thames.
Southwark Council claims that the bizarre spectacle serves to pair waste collection with art in an innovative way that will be seen "by many thousands of people around the borough".
"We hope that this project will provoke questions about the art and encourage people to visit the wealth of art on display in galleries, studios and at local arts festivals," the council's culture boss Columba Blango told the Metro.
One of the artists involved in the project, Gabriela Szulman, now has her art displayed on a lorry in Dulwich.
Taking part in the project meant that more people are getting to see it than if it had been hung in a gallery, said Ms Szulman.
"The most important thing is that people enjoy it," she added.
