Increase in illegal stowaways found in lorry fleets
Figures from the Home Office have revealed that the number of illegal immigrants found on board UK-bound vehicles has risen.
Lorry drivers can be fined up to £4,000 for every illegal passenger found on board a vehicle.
International transport fleet owners are therefore being advised that systematic checks should be carried out on vehicles in order to prevent fines, reports Transport News Network.
The Home Office Immigration and Nationality Directorate is also introducing a Civil Penalty Accreditation Scheme to help combat the problem. The scheme is intended to assist fleet operators further in reducing the number of illegal immigrants stowed in vehicles.
The Freight Transport Association's (FTA) head of international service, Don Armour, said that those operators already utilising driver check systems "will find little that is new in the Home Office requirements" however.
The figures serve to underline the necessity of international transport fleet owners ensuring that documentation is complete for operating fleets, including comprehensive fleet insurance cover.
