Government fails green fleet test

Thu, 06 Apr 2006

The government's own fleet of cars are failing to meet environmental targets.

Targets for ten per cent of government department vehicles being alternatively fuelled and a ten per cent reduction in carbon emission by March 2006, set four years ago, have been missed.

Fleet News Net has uncovered that while in December Sustainable Development Commission (SDC) raised concerns about the progress of government departments, little development has been made.

A Department for Transport said that data had not been collated on the subject from different departments

The fleet managers' association ACFO told Fleet News Net: "If the targets are unreachable, then it needs to be honest and say they are unreachable, and take them off everybody.

"If they are reachable, then the government needs to be an exemplar of best practice."

While the government may be missing targets, taking on environmentally friendly policies could reduce the cost of running a fleet along with good value fleet insurance.
