Fleet provider bans smoking
Thu, 02 Mar 2006
Lex Vehicle Leasing is to help fleet operators ban smoking in their van fleets.
The company made the decision after new laws bans Scottish van drivers smoking in their vehicles, but has decided to extend a scheme to encourage the prohibition across the whole country.
All vans will be provided with double-sided window stickers and then the fleet operator can make their own decision on whether they are fitted to the vehicles.
The stickers are also available for fleets that are not new.
Although the Scottish ban on van drivers smoking comes in on March 26th, Lex has admitted it is concerned whether the deadline will be met, as there are uncertainties over how smoking drivers will be reported.
Lex Vehicle Leasing managing director Jon Walden said: "We have had conversations with the Scottish Executive about the ban in Scotland and have officially written to them to clarify the issue around reporting the driver who has been caught smoking in their van.
"They have responded by saying it will take 20 days to come back and clarify the situation which will take us dangerously close to the legislation date. Until then we will have to hold fire."
Mr Walden stated that he felt what would happen was that fleets would have to set up their own telephone numbers with a contact name so that drivers spotted smoking could be reported.
The cost of the law is set to be an added expensive burden on those who run fleets, but good value fleet insurance could help to bring down costs.
