Firms could take blame for employee crashes

Thu, 09 Feb 2006

Car crash victims are being routinely asked by police whether they were driving for work purposes.

Companies which require employees to drive immediately after a long flight may have to shoulder the blame for accidents as a result.

Senior consultant at the Corporate Travel Partnership, Richard Plummer, confirmed that police are now spending additional time investigating road accidents if the driver was travelling for work purposes, in order to see if there was an element of corporate responsibility.

According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), up to 1,000 people are killed on British roads each year in accidents in some way related to work; many from sheer tiredness.

"Many bosses have ignored this problem in the past, but the Health and Safety Executive has now made it clear that employers have duties under health and safety law to manage the risks faced by their workers on the road," a RoSPA spokesman told the Times.

While fleet managers are concerned about the quality of the cars in terms of safety and environmental standards, it now appears that employees' physical and mental state while driving should be given the "same level of importance".

Arranging adequate fleet insurance should also be a pressing concern for employers.
