Diesel still number one for fleet drivers
Thu, 18 May 2006
Diesel powered vehicles are the number one choice for fleet drivers, a new survey shows.
Research commissioned by the Bank of Scotland Vehicle Finance (BoSVF) found that more than seven in ten company car drivers have opted for a diesel-powered car.
This suggests a steady increase in the number of diesel cars covered by the average company's fleet insurance, with 58 per cent of drivers opting for diesel last year, up from 50 per cent in 2004.
BoSVF director of new business, Sean Bingham, said: "For the company car driver, even with the increase in benefit-in-kind tax being applied to diesel vehicles this financial year, diesels are still more tax-efficient and still present many benefits with diesel being around 25 per cent more fuel efficient than petrol."
However, the BoSVF's 2006 Company Cars: The Drivers' Perspective report also found that many fleet managers could improve safety, which should reduce the need for a fleet insurance claim.
According to the 2,000 company car drivers polled, some companies could do more to train drivers, penalise those responsible for accidents and check driving licences thoroughly.
