Business driving test unveiled
Thu, 11 May 2006
The cost of fleet insurance could be set to drop this year, with the introduction of a new advanced driving test aimed specifically at business drivers.
Launched jointly by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents and driver training company DriveTech, the new tests aims to train business drivers in an effort to cut the number of accidents involving people who drive as part of their job.
The test requires fleet drivers to not only display good road sense, but also knowledge of the dangers of fatigue, drink and drugs on driving ability.
It is estimated that accident rates among business drivers are up to 50 per cent higher than other drivers, inevitably pushing fleet insurance costs up.
It is hoped that the next advanced driver training will help reduce those costs.
Drivers who take the DVLA-approved PassPlus advanced driving course can already expect reduced car insurance premiums.
Commenting on the new test, Andy Wheeler, director of training at DriveTech said: "A specific test has long been needed for business drivers because of the high mileages they cover and the pressures they face to meet deadlines when out on the road.
"Companies who ask their drivers to take the test will benefit from having a safer and more efficient fleet."
