Bus fleet hits the road
Lothian Buses has announced that it is introducing 60 new vehicles to its fleet as part of a £10 million upgrade programme.
The majority of the new vehicles, which come fitted with modern CCTV systems, will provide replacements to the old maroon and white buses in the 600-strong fleet.
They will be delivered in small batches from the Wrightbus factory in Ballymena, Northern Ireland, with all 60 vehicles expected to be up and running by December.
The first vehicle was launched by council leader Donald Anderson this week on route 44 from Pencaitland to Balerno. It has been designed to help people with mobility difficulties, according to the Scotsman.
Lothian Buses said 55 of the new vehicles are double-deckers and will serve key routes in the city, as well as the airport shuttle service, while the five single-deckers will run the number 22 route along the Fastlink guided busway.
Pilmar Smith, chairman of Lothian Buses, said: "These new state-of-the-art buses will further help us achieve our aim of offering public transport users the best quality buses available. Passengers can easily identify their bus and coupled with the bright airy interior we hope they will find the bright, airy interior very comfortable."
Lothian Buses is one of a number of companies across the UK currently seeking to upgrade its fleet with buses featuring passenger-friendly technology.
The firm, which is majority-owned by the city council, has witnessed a 25 per cent increase in passenger numbers since 1998 and is likely to be seeking to review its fleet insurance policy in light of its new purchases.
