4x4 tax increase
Fleet mangers should take note that the budget could hold a surprise for sports utility vehicles (SUV).
It is thought that Chancellor Gordon Brown is considering putting a £200 vehicle excise duty on SUVs.
As well as raising money for the Treasury the aim would be to cut down on the numbers of large off-road vehicles on the streets, as they tend to pollute the atmosphere more than average cars.
It is estimated they produce more than 250g of carbon dioxide for every kilometre on the road.
With 187,000 SUVs being sold last year alone, the Treasury could earn over £35 million from new SUVs alone.
Energy minister Malcolm Wicks made the governments view on such 4x4s clear.
He told the Times: "There is crass irresponsibility in some of the larger monstrosities people drive around suburbia and in London. We have to move against this kind of thing."
If your fleet includes an SUV or two, one way to keep down costs if the tax is introduced is to look for good value fleet insurance.
