Young drivers 'more accident prone'

Thu, 18 May 2006

Young drivers are far more likely to have a serious accident than their more experienced counterparts, new figures confirm.

Car insurance intermediary the A&A Group found that younger drivers were almost twice as likely to make a car insurance claim following an accident.

Analysing its figures for 2003 to 2005, the group found that 38 per cent of 17- and 18-year-old drivers had made a car insurance claim, compared to 20 per cent of those aged 25 or older, with past claims making it more difficult for drivers to obtain cheap car insurance in the future.

A&A Group chief executive Tony Allen said that the figures confirmed what many people already knew about younger, inexperienced drivers, but that efforts now had to be made to reduce the number of accidents among new motorists.

"We believe it is vital that steps are taken to help young drivers and cut the horrific number of accidents in this sector," he said.

"If, by introducing new measures to protect young drivers we can go some way towards reducing these horrific instances and in so doing reduce car insurance premiums for young drivers, then we will have achieved a result."

The group also analysed figures from the Home Office and Department for Transport, finding that one in four drivers convicted of causing death by dangerous is under 20-years-old.

Similarly, one in four of those drivers killed on the roads are under 25-years-old, despite this group only accounting for one in 15 of all motorists.
