UK in EU's worst congestion levels
Motorists in the UK suffer from some of the worst congestion levels in Europe, according to a new survey.
Despite also paying the highest fuel prices in Europe, Britain has "one of the worst road networks", said the director of the Road Users' Alliance (RUA), Tim Green.
On top of this, packed motorways are also thought to be damaging British business and "stunting growth in the regions", according to figures released by the RUA.
Mr Green added: "These are the vital roles that drive our economy and should promote productivity and prosperity across the country, yet these are the roads in which traffic regularly grinds to a halt."
He went on to criticise the fact that in the previous ten years, taxes have failed to bring about even a one per cent increase in motorway capacity. Although more than 90 per cent of all passenger travel is carried on UK roads, the roads themselves take up only one per cent of the country's land mass.
Car insurance costs are also only set to rise unless action is taken against increasingly crowded roads in Britain.
