UK drivers fall foul of European road laws
British holiday makers driving abroad are unaware of the difference in car insurance laws on the continent, a recent survey has found.
It is illegal to drive in most European countries without carrying both a full driver's licence and car insurance documents at all times, yet as many as one in seven of us forget to bring them when we drive on the continent.
UK drivers who ignore or forget these laws run the risk of heavy fines if stopped by the police in a European country.
The survey, carried out by a leading British insurer, also found that British drivers experience a whole host of other problems while driving abroad, including navigating unfamiliar roads and reading foreign language road signs.
Almost a quarter of those surveyed found driving on the wrong side of the road irritating, and 15 per cent said they found foreign drivers an annoyance.
Although the unfamiliarity of driving abroad is part and parcel of a family holiday or business trip, problems can be avoided by planning routes in advance, and ensuring that you have adequate holiday and car insurance cover for your trip.
